Celtic Handfasting & Knot-Tying Wedding Ceremony Script
Revives the ancient Celtic tradition of "tying the knot"—binding the couple’s joined hands with braided cords while reciting timeless promises.
Helpful delivery notes for the officiant
- Practice draping and tying the handfasting cord once during rehearsal so it slips cleanly off their joined wrists afterward while keeping the knot intact!
- Have the couple cross right-hand-to-right-hand and left-hand-to-left-hand (forming an infinity figure-eight) before wrapping the cords.
- Use a five-to-six-foot braided ribbon or tartan cord so the ends drape photogenically while you speak the blessing.
Gathering Circle & Celtic Welcome
Failte—a hundred thousand welcomes to every soul gathered in this circle today. Please be seated. Long before marriage was recorded on parchment in stone courthouses, ancient Celtic communities gathered under open skies and old-growth oaks to witness two lovers bind their hands and destinies together. Today we honor that living heritage as [PARTNER A] and [PARTNER B] stand before their kith and kin. Each of you has walked part of the road with them, offering shelter in winter seasons and celebration in summer light, and your witness makes this circle whole.
Blessing of the Four Directions & Shared Journey
[PARTNER A] and [PARTNER B], may the steadiness of the earth anchor your home; may the clarity of rushing water keep your hearts honest and forgiving; may the warmth of the hearth fire kindle your passion across the decades; and may the free wind carry joy through every window of your life together. Two separate streams have wound down different hillsides to meet at this confluence, never again to travel alone.
Statutory Declaration of Intent
Before I drape the cords of your handfasting, declare now your free and sovereign will before these witnesses. [PARTNER A], do you come of your own free heart to take [PARTNER B] as your lawful wedded spouse, to honor, protect, and cherish them through sun and storm all the days of your life? ([PARTNER A]: "I do.") And [PARTNER B], do you come of your own free heart to take [PARTNER A] as your lawful wedded spouse, to honor, protect, and cherish them through sun and storm all the days of your life? ([PARTNER B]: "I do.")
The Handfasting Ritual — "Tying the Knot"
This is where the ancient phrase "tying the knot" was born. Look now into each other’s eyes as these cords are woven around your hands. With this first wrap, you bind yourselves to truth—that your words to one another will always be honest and gentle. With this second wrap, you bind yourselves to courage—that neither sorrow nor distance will loosen your grip. With this third wrap, you bind yourselves to joy—that laughter, music, and gratitude will dwell beneath your roof. [PARTNER A], say to [PARTNER B]: "Heart of my heart, soul of my soul, as our hands are bound, so I bind my life to yours." [PARTNER B], say to [PARTNER A]: "Heart of my heart, soul of my soul, as our hands are bound, so I bind my life to yours." As this knot is drawn fast, remember: it is not these cords that hold you together, but the daily devotion of the two hands within them.
Exchange of Wedding Rings
Alongside this woven knot, you exchange rings of enduring metal. [PARTNER A], place this ring on [PARTNER B]’s finger and repeat: "[PARTNER B], with this ring I wed thee—my shelter, my companion, and my everlasting love." [PARTNER B], place this ring on [PARTNER A]’s finger and repeat: "[PARTNER A], with this ring I wed thee—my shelter, my companion, and my everlasting love."
Irish Blessing & Official Pronouncement
May the road rise up to meet you both; may the wind be ever at your backs; may the sun shine warm upon your faces and the rain fall soft upon your fields. Having bound your hands in ancient promise and declared your free consent before these witnesses, by the authority vested in me as an ordained minister of Agape Church International and under the laws of this State, I pronounce you legally married! [PARTNER A] and [PARTNER B], seal your handfasting with a kiss!
