Christian Baptism & Confession of Faith Liturgy
A clear, historic Christian water baptism liturgy adaptable for river, ocean, baptistry immersion, or font pouring—complete with public confession of faith and Trinitarian pronouncement.
Helpful delivery notes for the officiant
- For full-water immersion, instruct the candidate beforehand to fold both arms across their chest, hold their nose with one hand while you support their back and wrist, and bend at the knees rather than leaning stiffly backward.
- Ensure dry dark towels, a warm robe, and a trusted assistant are waiting immediately at the water’s edge.
- Present a signed Baptism Certificate recording the exact date, location, and witnesses after everyone has dried off.
Pastoral Welcome & Meaning of the Waters
Brothers, sisters, family, and friends of [PARTNER B]—grace, mercy, and peace to you! Today we gather beside living water for one of the oldest and most joyful sacred acts of the Christian faith: the baptism of [PARTNER A]. Across creation, water washes away dust, quenches deep thirst, and awakens green life from barren ground. In Christian baptism, ordinary water becomes an outward and visible testimony of an inward, transforming grace. Water itself does not earn God’s love—rather, stepping into these waters declares openly before heaven and earth that our past mistakes no longer define us, that divine mercy holds the final word, and that in Christ a brand-new chapter has begun.
Scripture Warrant — Romans 6:3–4 & Matthew 28:18–20
Hear the words of our Lord Jesus Christ to His disciples in Matthew chapter twenty-eight: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." And the Apostle Paul writes in Romans chapter six: "Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life." Today [PARTNER A] steps gladly into that living promise.
Public Confession of Faith
[PARTNER A], before God and the witnesses of [PARTNER B] gathered around these waters today, I invite you to declare your faith plainly from your own heart. Do you turn away from selfishness, bitterness, and all that diminishes love and truth, trusting wholly in God’s forgiving grace rather than your own perfection? ([PARTNER A]: "I do.") Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, Redeemer, and Lord, receiving His unconditional agape love as the foundation of your life? ([PARTNER A]: "I do.") And is it your sincere commitment to follow in the way of Christ—practicing compassion, humility, reconciliation, and faithful service all the days of your life? ([PARTNER A]: "It is, with God’s help.")
Thanksgiving Over the Water & Trinitarian Baptism
Eternal Father, we thank You for the gift of water—over which Your Spirit hovered at the dawn of creation, through which You led Your people into freedom, and in which Your beloved Son Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River, hearing Heaven’s voice declare, "You are My beloved, with whom I am well pleased." Sanctify this sacred hour by Your Holy Spirit. [PARTNER A], upon your public profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and in joyful obedience to His command, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Buried with Christ in baptism—and raised to walk in newness of life! Amen!
Post-Baptismal Blessing & Congregational Welcome
Heavenly Father, thank You for new beginnings. Refresh and seal [PARTNER A] daily by Your Holy Spirit, and sustain them in unshakable joy, quiet courage, and abiding peace from this hour forward. On bright days and difficult days alike, may [PARTNER A] remember the coolness of these waters and never doubt that they are Your beloved child—forgiven, cherished, and called to carry light into weary places. Friends and family of [PARTNER B], let us rejoice together and welcome [PARTNER A] with gladness, prayer, and celebration! Amen!
