Helpful delivery notes for the officiant

  • Always knock gently, verify with nurses or family before entering, silence your phone completely, and sit at eye level rather than towering over a hospital bed.
  • Ask explicit permission—"Would a quiet prayer feel comforting right now?"—and keep bedside visits brief (10 to 15 minutes) so the patient does not feel obligated to entertain you.
  • Step aside immediately whenever nurses or physicians enter for clinical care; pastoral ministry honors and supports medical teams.
Part 01 of 06

Gentle Bedside Arrival & Permission to Pray

[Stage Direction: Pull a chair slightly to the side of the bed at eye level so [PARTNER A] does not have to strain their neck. Speak softly.]

[PARTNER A], it is a gift simply to sit quietly beside you today. Please know right away that you do not need to find energy to make conversation or host me—even closing your eyes while I am here is completely welcome. Your only work right now is resting and receiving care. [PARTNER B] and so many people who love you have been holding you tenderly in our hearts. Whenever silence feels best, we can simply share quiet company; and if you would welcome a gentle word of scripture and prayer for peace today, I would be honored to pray over you.

Part 02 of 06

Prayer Before Surgery, Treatment or Uncertain News

[Stage Direction: If invited, rest a clean hand lightly alongside—never pressing down on—medical lines or blankets.]

Gracious Healer, Author of breath, and ever-present Refuge, You know every cell, every heartbeat, and every unspoken worry inside this room. Today we place [PARTNER A] tenderly into Your faithful hands. Guide the eyes, hands, communication, and clinical wisdom of every surgeon, nurse, therapist, technician, and physician caring for [PARTNER A]. Quiet the hum of uncertainty beneath these hospital lights, surround [PARTNER A]’s body and mind with calm resilience, ease discomfort, and assure [PARTNER A] in waking and in sleep that they are deeply loved and never carried alone. Amen.

Part 03 of 06

Scripture of Quiet Assurance in Weakness

[Stage Direction: Read slowly at conversational volume, pausing between promises so [PARTNER A] can simply rest with eyes closed.]

Listen gently to these ancient words of comfort, which ask nothing from you except rest. From Psalm forty-six: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Be still, and know that I am God." From Psalm one hundred twenty-one: "My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He who keeps you will not slumber." From Isaiah chapter forty-one: "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand." And Jesus’ tender promise: "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

Part 04 of 06

Blessing for Exhausted Family & Caregivers

[Stage Direction: Turn warmly toward [PARTNER B] seated nearby in the room or hallway.]

Compassionate Lord, we also lift up [PARTNER B], who have kept long vigils in bedside chairs, tracked medical updates, answered anxious phone calls, and poured out quiet devotion through tired nights. Replenish everything that exhaustion has spent. Free [PARTNER B] from guilt whenever they step outside for fresh air, nourishment, or an hour of sleep. Grant patience, clear understanding in every consultation with doctors, and moments of unexpected grace and tenderness shared together in this room. Amen.

Part 05 of 06

Hospice Vigil Prayer of Peace & Sacred Release

[Stage Direction: Use this section specifically during end-of-life hospice vigils when [PARTNER A] and [PARTNER B] seek peaceful assurance.]

Eternal Shepherd, who knew [PARTNER A] before their very first sunrise and walked faithfully beside them across every chapter of earthly life, draw near in this sacred twilight hour. Soften every physical ache and settle every breath into unhurried stillness. Whisper deep peace to [PARTNER A]’s spirit: assure them that their life has mattered profoundly, that [PARTNER B] will hold one another closely in love, and that whenever the moment arrives to lay down earthly weariness, Your everlasting arms stand wide open in light, mercy, and homecoming. Amen.

Part 06 of 06

Quiet Parting Benediction of Presence

[Stage Direction: Rise quietly without jarring the bed or expecting a lengthy goodbye.]

May deep peace abide with you, [PARTNER A], and surround [PARTNER B] every hour of this day and night. May stillness guard this room, may mercy meet you fresh with every breath, and may unending love hold you fast beneath you and above you. Rest gently—you are cherished.
